Art and Culture in Lexington: Museums and Galleries to Visit This Fall

As a guest at the Inn at Hastings Park, you’ll find yourself splendidly put up in our historic Relais & Châteaux hotel a mere 15 miles from the many historical and cultural attractions of Boston. Yet our own city of Lexington, Massachusetts—the Birthplace of American Liberty—lays claim to a rich arts-and-culture scene that’s yours to explore while luxuriating in our boutique accommodations.

Here are some of the museums, art galleries, and cultural centers you might consider checking out during a fall visit to the Inn!

Nearby Art Galleries & Exhibition Spaces

The Munroe Center for the Arts (1403 Massachusetts Ave, Lexington, MA) presents shows by local artists on a two-month rotation in its middle-floor Gallery, open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM. Currently on display is American Photographs, a collection of landscape images by Neal Rantoul, which runs through December 20th. (There’s a public reception for American Photographs scheduled for Thursday, November 14th.)

Over at nearby gallery twist (1963 Massachusetts Ave, Lexington, MA), meanwhile, two floors of a historic Lexington home are given over to showcases of New England art spanning many different styles, media, and themes. The gallery puts on five exhibitions each year, typically featuring dozens of artists and better than 200 pieces.

LexArt (130 Waltham St., Lexington, MA), the Lexington Arts & Crafts Society, has been infusing art into the community since 1935 and continues to dedicate itself to making art and the artistic process accessible to all. Along with a host of free public events, LexArt opens its gallery during shows from Tuesday to Sunday, 11 AM to 5 PM. It’s currently hosting the 11th Annual Korean Cultural Society of Boston Exhibition: Transitional Earth, on display through November 24th. And beginning December 1st and running through December 24th, LexArt will welcome visitors to its Annual Holiday Marketplace Sale.

Explore the history and artistic significance of captured images at the Griffin Museum of Photography (67 Shore Rd, Winchester, MA), the main galleries of which are only about 15 minutes away from the Inn at Hastings Park. Honoring the legacy of influential Massachusetts photographer Arthur Griffin, the museum is currently presenting The Collector’s Eye: Frazier King and Jo Sandman: A Life in Art through December 8th, as well as exhibitions at such satellite galleries as The Griffin @ WinCam (22 Swanton St., Winchester, MA).

Revolutionary War Museums & Visitor Centers

This fall, you might also consider delving into our area’s hugely significant Revolutionary War history ahead of next year’s Lex250 celebrations: April 2025 will mark the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Lexington, the opening fight of the American Revolution.

The Minute Man National Historical Park encompasses many historic sites—the Lexington Battle Green and Concord’s North Bridge among them—and also includes the museum exhibits of its North Bridge Visitor Center (174 Liberty St., Concord, MA) and Minute Man Visitor Center (210 Grace North Rd, Lincoln, MA).

At the Lexington Visitor Center (1875 Massachusetts Ave, Lexington, MA), meanwhile, you can admire Major William Francis Buckley’s Diorama of the Battle of Lexington, which was showcased at the World’s Fair in New York City in 1964.
